Even though there is no clear-cut answer to the question of a computer being a friend or foe in the classroom, having an unsolvable question of good or bad brings many issues to light.

For example, the fact that much of the software designed for children is appealing to them. If nothing else, it at least holds the children's attention. Though this may seem like a positive characteristic, consider this, just because a television show holds your attention, does it necessarily educate you? The answer to this is simple, maybe some do, but certainly not all do, mostly they are just simply entertaining. This causes me to raise an eyebrow at some, not all, software. As a teacher, one must not use time-fillers, cause a child can watch television or play on a computer at home, but as a teacher, we must educate, and if there is no educational value in the software, what good is it for a teacher?

On the defense for teachers, another reason for computers being a shortcoming is that sometimes the software is not clear that it is non-educational. This can be a common mistake of any educator, being fooled that a product could be educational when it is merely entertainment software dressed up in an educational costume aimed at these gullible teachers.

According to Cindy C. Emmans (2001), a professor of Educational Technology at Central Washington University, on software in the classroom …

"Often feedback is the key to learning, and computers are appealing because this feedback can be immediate, which is of course a very effective learning tool. Gerald W. Bracey sums it up adequately in a journal article called Principal by basically saying that the bells and whistles are all there, but the education is not, because it was not produced by someone who understands how children learn. (1996, p. 6).

More arguments in the research area continued in September of 2000, the Alliance for Childhood published a statement against the use of computers in schools. More than 85 experts in various fields including psychiatry, education, and philosophy signed the statement in which calls for a suspension on the promoting introduction of computers into the nation's elementary schools until there is a more careful assessment of their effect (Hafner, 2000). If this is the case, and only a specific amount of students can be on the computer at one time, then you are dividing your classroom, and not integrating it, as it should be. This causes many difficulties in teaching a whole group instruction, which leads to problems in skill development, since the attention of some students is lacking. (Tiene 2001).

On the Colorado state education web site (2003), I was able to find questions that were asked to teachers regarding computers in their classrooms. The teachers were asked, "What do you find unattractive about teaching in a computer based classroom?" The one teacher commented that, "Students have a tendency to come in a print out their papers at the beginning of class instead of coming into class with a hard copy …" Another teacher said, "Technological difficulty, your whole lesson could be shot for the day if the computer would go down ". When the teachers were asked about the difficulties they faced themselves and with the students due to computers in the classroom, they answered, "It is hard to get the students attention when they are on the computers." Another teacher commented, "There are times that I send them to work and instead they are interacting with each other." Another teacher stated her fear of the computer classroom by saying that, "Students are at their own screens, they're in their own little world, and they are not talking to their classmates, sometimes I think that they don't even know half the names of all the people in their class. " (Barnes 2003)

I feel that these teachers comments are very important when looking at the issue of computers in the classrooms, because these are the people that actually interact with the children in the classroom, they are not just some random research study by a software company, these people are the real thing, and they see how computers are effecting their classrooms.

Another issue of computers in the classrooms regards the child's health. If a child were to be functioning on a computer for a long interlude of time or with incorrect positioning they will inadvertently obstruct their own health, some problems caused from this include muscular-skeletal injuries and vision problems. (MacArthur & Shneiderman, 1986).

Another issue concerning computer use in classrooms is that a lot of teachers have not been trained to use a computer, and many do not know how. An enormous amount of time would have to be consumed for the teachers to learn both the hardware and the software of the computer. They also would need time to collaborate with other teachers. Time is something that many teachers spend planning lessons and the weekly events of their classroom. The other problem that was just mentioned was the training of the teachers. Some educators do not have local training options available to them. Some do not have the time or money to spend on it. Another issue is that even if a teacher does go through training, there are always unsuspected things that can go wrong with a computer. If a teacher were to base their whole lesson on a computer, and it were to crash, and the teacher just being minimally skilled in using computers, would not be able to fix the system so that they could continue their lesson. (Tiene 2001) .Therefore an on-site technology expert would be needed on site at all times in case any of these incidences would happen, and quite frankly I do not think that there are too many school districts looking for another expense.

Another reason for computers being a disadvantage in the classroom is that if the computer is Internet accessible, if this is the case, then the children can be exposed to Internet content that is not appropriate for their age level. They can also be exposed to child predators, which is a huge concern in today's world.

Computers in the classroom may not provide the students with the proper education that they need if the software being used is not adequate. Computers may not be, depending on the school, made available to each student. The attention of the students is harder to get when they are on the computer. An inexperienced teacher in the technology area may cause many problems in the classroom, and consume valuable time that could be used to educate. Most schools do not provide an on site technician in case a difficulty may arise. The children's health may be affected by long-term use of the computers, and probably the most frightening one is that these children can be exposed to child predators and unfiltered inappropriate content through the web while they are in school and in their classrooms presumed to be receiving their education.

Typically, they're the salesman – doing * everything * to get people to buy their stuff. We all have the image in our heads; the "wheeler-dealer", picking any opportunity to try and exploit (and other people) for profit.

Indeed, the term "entrepreneur" seems to have drifted around the present lexicon – from "something you did" (typically to improve people's lives) into a blend of "money mad hustler" and "someone who doesn't 'follow the rules' ".

The reality is the modern meaning could not be further from the truth.

Entrepreneurship isn't a vocation or job. It's not a label which you apply to yourself in order to make yourself more endearing to a particular party, or clientele … it's a way of doing things.

Many "entrepreneurial" types actually have jobs. They'll never admit they are "entrepreneurs", although they exhibit all the traits of one. The question is what these traits are, and whether you – or someone you know – has them.

What Is An "Entrepeneur" ?

Entrepreneur is a word derived from French – loosely describing a "problem solver".

Whilst its connotation has changed over the years, the premise persists – an "entrepreneur" is someone who creates a "widget" and has the ability to encourage other people to buy it.

What this "widget" is can be a commercial product, service or idea .

It's actually interesting … some of the greatest "entrepreneurs" of history actually had nothing to do with money. They were completely focused on the development of a particular "result" and committed themselves whole-heartedly to its realization.

Whether this meant conquering the Persian empire (Alexander), developing the light bulb (Edison) or creating stable PC systems (Gary Kildall), conquering the Aztec empire (Cortez), the term "entrepreneur" really denotes someone who wants to build something.

The BIG difference between "original" entrepreneurs and the swathes of new-age idiots (who typically aggrandize a hedonistic lifestyle + seem to have an infatuation for "crypto") is that the former were committed to a single profession, and manage to " leverage "that through the development of increasingly ambitious" projects.

These projects could be anything … but they all had a core "reason" to exist. This reason was what drove the originator to pursue the endeavor, and continue even when it was questionable whether it was even "possible" or not. Obviously, the reason we remember them is that they not only discovered it was "possible", but entirely feasible … hence their success.

How To Tell If Someone Is One

The typical sign is they will do strange things …

  • interest in esoteric ideas
  • pursuit of interests not directly correlated to the accumulation of wealth
  • strong displays of passion for particular subjects
  • immersive nature with different ideas (trying to recreate historical events etc)

The point is that REAL entrepreneurs are not typically concerned about money at all .

Their primary concern is the creation of a "thing". What that thing is, is determined by either their character or interests … but in every instance of someone who's achieved a large amount of success, they were completely and utterly focused on doing "their" thing no matter what.

This is actually important.

The modern world seems to have every 18 year old male wanting to be an "entrepreneur" – like it's a badge of honor or something. If you're not "growing", you're "dying" … right?

The truth is that our society has become so focused on convenience that the majority of these money-grabbing idiots have absolutely no business even considering themselves "entrepreneurs".

They have no experience, no skills and are only latching onto the latest "fad" in order to escape the mediocrity which has come to pervade the West's consumerist culture.

Entrepreneurship typically follows YEARS of interest in a particular subject. It typically follows HUGE investments of time & energy into the cultivation of a skill set, experience and "involvement" in a particular space.

Most importantly – entrepreneurship is about doing something "your way".

Stay Clear Of Modern Idiots

The BIGGEST problem I continually see from the hoards of idiots is they are following following a "book" or some other "rules" on "how" to be an entrepreneur.

I see it all the time … guys reading all the biographies, neural studies, latest books from the big wealthy fat cat – all trying to discover the "secret" to massive success.

What's ironic is that all of this stuff just works on the "outside" of the issue – the same people who read all the "stuff" end up with the SAME questions … "what do I sell?" – "how do I know if I'm going to make money on a product? " – "What's the secret to getting rich?".

  • If you have to ask "what do I sell", you're not an entrepreneur.
  • If you have to listen to what a "successful" person has to say on a subject, you're not an entrepreneur.
  • If you have to consider all the "rules" put forward by others, you're not an entrepreneur.

The point is that the modern world is chock-full of wannabe losers. Even the "successful" ones aren't actually truly successful – they may have made a bunch of money, but what did they actually achieve ? The answer is relatively little (or even nothing).

The truth is that if you want to "be" an entrepreneur, you have to get to work.

EVERYBODY has their own work. Some are models. Some are footballers. Some are computer programmers. Some are painters.

The "trick" is to do ANYTHING in order to get moving forward in an industry; Clean the floors if necessary.

Once you start to gain some progress, the "entrepreneurial" stuff comes from leveraging any progress made within it – either to create & market a product, or to help a market better appreciate the potential of another device / product.

Traits Of "Real" Entrepreneurs

  • Quiet (or at least reserved )
  • Fully capable of embracing failure (indeed, using it as a spur to change / adapt)
  • Working constantly on different elements within their "industry" (again, everyone has a place)
  • Unafraid of social constructs (just because someone said it doesn't make it true)
  • Laser focused on what "they" want to do (you want to bring sustainable farming to Africa? This is the type of thing a "real" entrepreneur will actually do)
  • Unafraid to give freely (most "entrepreneur" types are not attached to money at all … typically not having much until they find mercantile success)

If you haven't worked it out, the core is purpose.

The modern world has very little emphasis on purpose; rather it focuses on productivity.

Nothing wrong with this, but it devoids most people of their passion. It's good for GDP and McDonald's – but bad for the creativity lying latent within a large number of people.

If you want to adopt "entrepreneurial" traits, the key is to become attuned to a particular "purpose" – through which you're able to invest your entire life.

If you're just looking at Ferrari's and thinking that you "kind of want to become rich" – entrepreneurship is not going to do that. It's a very difficult road, with only the most persistent and enduring surviving.

You need to get to work, and only then will you discover hidden opportunities into which you're able to apply your expertise, experience or network to build something of real value to the world. This real value is then absorbed by the market, who'll either pay handsomly for it – or reject it. This is pretty-much what determines whether someone could be considered an "entrepreneur" or not.

Our careers too present a lot of volatility and demands struggle at almost every point. What are they?

Perhaps the most striking feature of career survivalists is their understanding of and adaptability to change. They are the kind of people who, without relying on anyone else, carve their career completely based on their own effort. Engineering jobs are not always solely about engineering. Engineering functions were traditionally focused on building something using different variations of math and science. These jobs have recently transformed into combining more business functions. In John Hooker's white paper, he states, "engineers are sharply involved in startup companies in which they make business decisions as well as engineering decisions." Cross-functional teams include members in engineering, sales, manufacturing, marketing, and warranty. Many engineers today have multiple hats to wear and are even labeled as "project" engineers. Wikipedia defines project engineering as "bridging the boundaries between engineering and project management." Since the role of the engineering field has changed over the years, engineers face more and more ethical choices and decisions. Engineers must create designs and services to customers in an ethical manner.

There are many different professional societies for engineers to join. Some of these societies include but are not limited to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Project Management Institute (PMI), The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). Each of these organizations has a similar code of ethics for its members.

A sample of a societies code of ethics from the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE):

"Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall:

1-Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

2-Perform services only in areas of their competence.

Once a person joins one of these societies, an oath to uphold the code is taken. Members must take the code seriously for the professional to be dedicated to his / her employer, customers, vendors, or the general public.

Another ethical engineering practice is to conduct testing per the standards applicable to the engineered product or service. Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and the European Commission (CE) are all standards agencies that provide standards for safety of products to consumers. Products must be successfully tested based on the current standards to be able to apply the agency mark on the product. Engineers must perform tests in an honest and ethical manner. Documentation of the test data should be recorded in a fashion that can be reviewed years later if necessary. Test data should be honest, accurate, and not forged or altered. Recording failed test data is just as important as successful test data. Test data can be used in a court of law if someone is injured or killed by a product that has an agency label. Accurate and thorough data is essential for a solid case.

What makes you an entrepreneur ?; this question is simple but very difficult to answer. For a long time, people have studied the science behind entrepreneurial process, what drives a great entrepreneur, the things that make an ordinary person transforms into a job creator.

How to Plan the Perfect Open House

Have you ever spent time and energy planning an Open House, just to have less than five people attend? Have you ever had a ton of people show up at your Open House, and been able to convert a single one of them into a sale or a future client? Are you unsure about why your Open House failed?

Open Houses are now more important to the real estate agent than ever. A report in 2015 by the National Association of Realtors Home Buyers and Sellers indicated that 48% of home buyers cited the Open House as an important source for most of their information. The reasons for this are obvious, for many it's the first time that they're getting to smell, see, and feel the home in person. It's also a way to see what other people think of the house, which is a powerful push in a person's perception of a particular home.

Here are the best ways to make your Open House perfect:

1. Pick a unique property, that's easy to find.

We often don't have control over which property we're showing, but when we are able to select a house at which to host an Open House event, we should look for properties with the following:

* A direct route to them with very few turns. Street names are easy, and street signs are visible.

* Properties that are well kept, and visually pleasing from both the inside and outside.

* A home with some kind of "conversation starter". It has a unique feature, and is not just four walls. It might have an infinity pool, a walk-in closet, or a newly redesigned kitchen.

* Your signage should be larger than life. On the event day, you need something to make the signs stand out even more. Balloons are often used, or you could even try streamers, or pinwheels. Be creative, just try to find something professional, but that catches the light and people attention.

2. Have your Open House event at the right time.

* Don't have your event after dark. Plan your event to end at sunset.

* Consider having a separate open house preview, for neighbors only. And then an open-to-the-public type of event later. Neighbors love this preview event concept, because it makes them feel special, and they love suggesting who should live in their neighborhood. It also allows them to start thinking of friends and family they want nearby, and they become part of your sales force for you, as well as your advertising force for the actual open house.

* If you do have an event only for neighbors, consider taking out a camera and interviewing and recording them talking about the neighborhood. This is something you can add to your website, or social media, or have on repeat loop during your Open House. For example, imagine how powerful it is to have a recorded testimonial from a mother in the area about the school district?

* Don't pick a date and time where people are not available, for example, the majority of people work Monday through Fridays from 8 am-5pm, and may not be free on a Wednesday at 3pm. Additionally, people are usually not free on holiday weekends.

3. Make your Open House event the right vibe, and the more exciting, the better!

* Entertaining music is a possibility, but be careful that it's not distracting and that you avoid certain genres or language that may be offensive. Music may be seen as a way to cover up noises or mechanical failures in the house. Make sure that you're sensitive to how the music is being perceived.

* Snacks are a must! Try wine and cheese, or beer and wings. The most important part about the food is that it needs to match what type of neighborhood you are in. Fried chicken and hamburgers probably aren't appropriate at a million-dollar listing, but champagne and caviar probably aren't appropriate in a first-time homebuyer situation, either. Just a word of caution; However, if you are serving alcohol, be very careful about who you serve. You may even want to get someone on your team to help you out with this. The last thing you need is for someone to drink at your open house as a minor, or someone to drive off over intoxicated and get into an accident. If in the right kind of setting, having comfort foods is especially welcoming and makes many visitors feel more at home. Careful to avoid foods with bad odors or smells, as you don't want them attributed to the home.

* Consider leaving a hand-written sign to "Help Yourself" along with a list of ingredients, so that visitors feel like they are able to eat the snacks provided without fear.

* Consider having a slideshow or interactive photo board featuring the home at various times of year. You may want to show the home off in summer months, for example, if it's currently January and the garden and pool are frozen over.

* Consider making a table, desk, or station with local school information, neighborhood information, etc. The more resources you can provide, the better. You want the guest to stop at this station and pour over the resources, and ask as many questions as possible.

* Make sure to engage each and every visitor so they have are interested, and want to stay longer.

4. Don't just advertise your Open House, create buzz around it.

* Create an event on social media, and share it with all of your friends and clients, as well as everyone on your e-mail lists. Facebook ads have become an amazing resource for reaching a ton of people in your area that wouldn't have been in your networks otherwise. And it's incredibly cost-effective, for what it does. You should filter the Facebook ad to include only people in targeted zip codes. You can also un-invite or exclude people who work for other realtors or competing brokerages.

* Flyer surrounding businesses and schools in the area of ​​the listing. Knock on as many doors as possible.

* Visit neighbors' homes with nice newsletters or invitations. The nicer the invitation, the higher the chance that they will pop in to see what all of the fuss is about. Some agents even suggest using wedding style invitations.

* Don't just advertise on one channel. You can try Facebook events, Twitter, your own website, your e-mail list, your newsletter, NextDoor.com , and even Craigslist. Just make sure you follow all of the appropriate advertising and marketing laws as designated by your brokerage and state laws.

5. Logistics, Logistics, Logistics

* Make sure everything is in order so that you look your best, and the house looks it's best. it should be clean, light bulbs should be new, dust should be gone, air fresheners should be working, the climate should be controlled. I've even heard of certain agents baking cookies in advance of the big event so that the house feels and smells extra homey.

* Consider removing clutter, which makes navigating the home difficult. You can also remove or hide offensive art, or anything that might make someone feel uncomfortable. But be careful- make sure the homeowner doesn't just throw the clutter into closets or cabinets! People care more and more about storage these days, and if it looks like the cabinets and closets are busting at the seams with junk, they'll automatically assume that the amount of storage space in the house is not sufficient

* Use natural light to your advantage. Make sure all window treatments are open and all curtains are drawn. All light switches should be turned on, regardless of where they are. You don't want someone afraid to go in the basement, or thinking they aren't allowed to enter the garage.

* Make sure the home owner is not present. The last thing you need is them having an emotional breakdown because they are going down memory lane, or answering a question incorrectly. People also feel uncomfortable freeing roaming when the person who owns the property is looking over their shoulder.

* With that said, valuables, if left in the home, should be secured. At the very least, you should know what they are and where, and make an inventory of them. I strongly advise you insist that the home owner take them out of the property before the open house, so you're not held liable for them in case of damage or theft.

* Use your team. If you are alone at an Open House, you may be spread too thin. If you leave for a minute to check that a sign on the corner hasn't fallen down, you may miss someone who pops in to find no one there. Have one person for signage and the guest book, one person on food and drink detail, and that leaves you free to talk to and engage guests.

* Have a loan agent or lender on hand, in order to answer any potential questions the home buyer may have about the process.

* Make sure you have the necessary paperwork required. You can print out a copy of the MLS but it's strongly suggested that you make a booklet, flyer, or something more personalized to the property, and to yourself.

* Make sure you know the neighborhood, and have done comparisons of values ​​in the neighborhood. You may lose credibility if someone asks you a question and you're unfamiliar with this territory, and I'm sure you'd rather look like a pro!

6. Use the Personal Touch

* It's not enough to have each visitor sign in. You should take detailed notes on your conversation with each person. If you can't remember this, a helpful suggestion is to hide a notebook or tablet inside a kitchen drawer, and make notes as the day goes by.

* You should remember one thing about each visitor and bring it up at some point during their tour of the home. "Jerry, wouldn't this be an amazing place to store your golf clubs?"

* Don't try to sell anyone. They will come to you, and request the information they need, when they need it. This is a time to establish relationships. Your only objective should be to make this home (and yourself) memorable.

7. Follow Up

* Add all visitors to your e-mail list, as well as your newsletter list. AM Open House is a great app and resource to make sure you're keeping on task with this.

* For those visitors who were seriously interested in the home or in you, handwritten cards should be sent out thanking them for coming, and encouraging their business in the future. Take out that handy notebook you stashed, and make personal notes in each card. They're more likely to keep it the more personal it is. Above all, make sure your contact information is on each card.

* Some agents even send videos. You could forward on a Facebook live video of the open house, or send a YouTube video of the listing. You could even send some kind of greeting card video for a special way to say "thanks for attending!" BombBomb is a great resource for this type of video.

* Text message is a wonderful way to contact people, and has a 95% open rate. It's less invasive than a phone call, which people may avoid answering if they don't know a specific caller. Send a very specific text message with a thank you, the property address, and more information on the property, or a link for more information.

* Send a follow up to the follow up starting with the subject header "I forgot to tell you …" – You can then point out a feature you neglected to tell them about on the current property, or even point out other properties that you may have listed, if this one fell short for them.

Of course, the best resource for an Open House is a coach, who can suggest strategies unique to your community and clientele. Not only is this more effective, but a coach should follow up with you to make sure that everything went smoothly, and question each step if it doesn't.
